The Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed the first case of coronavirus in Lagos1, Nigeria. The case, which was confirmed on 27 February 2020, is the first case reported in Nigeria since the January 2020 outbreak in Wuhan, China.

This case involves an Italian citizen working in Nigeria who returned from , Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on February 25, 2020. The Nigerian government is stepping up measures through the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure that outbreaks in Nigeria are controlled and contained quickly.

The Multi-sectoral Coronavirus Preparedness Group, headed by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), has immediately activated its National Emergency Operations Centre and is working with the Lagos State Health Authorities to respond to this case and implement control measures.

Please remember that most people who are infected suffer only minor ailments and can recover easily. However, this can be more difficult for others, especially the elderly and people with other chronic diseases.

All Nigerians must take care of their health and maintain hand and respiratory hygiene to protect themselves and others, including their own families.
